The release of “Deadpool 2” on May 10, 2018 did not disappoint, and was just as hilarious as its predecessor. It shattered expectations, breaking the opening-day record for an R-rated movie, and made $18 million in its first day.
“Deadpool 2” follows the story of Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), an antihero mutant who has super healing abilities, allowing him to regenerate tissue and even regrow lost limbs. Deadpool, Wilson’s antihero persona, crosses paths with an angry mutant, Russell (Julian Dennison), whose life is soon in danger. Russell is targeted by Cable (Josh Brolin), a cyborg from the future, and Deadpool feels it is his responsibility to save his new friend.
With a budget of only $110 million, “Deadpool 2” grossed a total of $598.6 million as of June 3, 2018. In fact, it is the highest grossing comedy sequel of all time.
In addition to doing well financially, the film has also done well with the critics. “Deadpool 2” earned a score of 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, tying the score of its predecessor.
There were many factors that made “Deadpool 2” the amazing movie that it is. To start, the comedy in the film was absolutely amazing. There were countless references to other Marvel films throughout the movie, and Deadpool’s continuous use of breaking the fourth wall was perfectly timed and hilarious. Reynolds does such an excellent job at portraying Deadpool’s cocky, yet humorous character. Also, almost every character is funny in their own way and plays off Deadpool’s character so well.
Although “Deadpool 2” is known for its comedy, it had a lot of heart as well. There were many tragic scenes that definitely made the audience shed a few tears. In this film, the audience got to see a much more emotional side of Deadpool. Also, the development of Deadpool and Russell’s father-son-like relationship was emotional at times and added another dimension to the film.
Freshman Rohun Kapoor says, ”Even though I really enjoyed ‘Deadpool,’ it didn’t have the same emotional aspect that ‘Deadpool 2’ has. I like being able to further understand Deadpool’s character through his emotional scenes, and it adds much more depth to the movie.”
The characters in “Deadpool 2,” new and old, are what really brings the film together. All of the characters serve a purpose, whether it be comedic or emotional, and play an important role in the movie overall. A great new character is Domino (Zazie Beetz), a mutant who has the power of luck. Her superpower is very creative, and the use of it throughout the film is both hilarious and epic.
Another newly introduced character, Cable, also plays a major role in the story. Unlike many villains in hero movies, he is a lot more complicated than he appears and has multiple layers. His tragic backstory makes the audience somewhat understand his purpose, and he evolves greatly over the course of the movie.
Although he was introduced in “Deadpool,” the sequel dove deeper into the character of Colossus (Stefan Kapičić). Colossus is a member of the X-Men who is super strong and made of metal. Throughout the film, he is almost like Deadpool’s babysitter because he continues to look after him. The best part about his character is that he and Deadpool are complete opposites, as Colossus is very respectful and morally sound while Deadpool is obnoxious, comical and impolite. Although Colossus wants to keep peace, his action scenes in “Deadpool 2” are incredible, and his relationship with Deadpool is absolutely hilarious.
The mutant heroes in “Deadpool 2” all have a great role, but it is the regular humans that push the film over the top. The first is Dopinder (Karan Soni), a taxi driver that Deadpool met in the first movie. In “Deadpool 2,” however, Dopinder wishes to follow in Deadpool’s footsteps and become a contract killer. Dopinder does not have any superpowers and is frankly quite weak, but he is still a hysterical addition to Deadpool’s crew.
Freshman Aayush Gariwala says, “Dopinder was such a funny character in ‘Deadpool 2’ and he adds so much to the movie comedy wise. His relationship with Deadpool is great and he looks up to him, which is hilarious because Deadpool is a horrible role model. The weirdness of his character makes him so fun to watch and, overall, he is a nice addition to the film.”
Even though Dopinder is a great character, Peter (Rob Delaney) steals the show. When Deadpool puts out an ad for mutants to join X-Force, Peter answers the call. He is just a regular human with no powers, so when he goes on a mission with Deadpool, it is hilarious. The great part about Peter is that he is just a normal person who wants to be a hero. His interactions with Deadpool are so entertaining, and he is a character to whom all viewers can relate.
