When you think of the word ‘cocky’, what comes to mind? For me, it is Kanye West. The rapper is famous not only for his rhyming skills, but also for his arrogance and the outrageous things that come out of his mouth.
While most hate to admit it, West does have talent. The Chicago native started out producing for local hip-hop artists and then worked his way up to making beats for big-time rappers such as Jay Z. He then made it big in 2004 with his debut album, “The College Dropout,” and has since then made seven albums and won 21 Grammy awards.
To say the fame has gotten to his head is an understatement. While there are probably thousands of reasons why West is perceived as a jerk, here are the most memorable:
1. His complete and utter lack of modesty.
If you can’t tell by his obnoxious and in your face lyrics, West thinks he is just as good if not better than most people. Some people the artist has compared himself to over the years are:
-Jesus -Picasso -Steve Jobs -Michael Jordan -Tiger Woods -The Beatles -Kate Moss -Howard Hughes -Walt Disney -Henry Ford -Anna Wintour …and that is only a few.
“Kanye needs to get over himself. He is a good rapper, but so are a lot of artists and they’re not this obnoxious about it,” said junior Yazmyne Abbott.
2. His relationship with Kim Kardashian.
In April 2012, People Magazine’s dreams came true when ‘Kimye’ became an item. SNL’s “Waking up with Kimye” skit says it all, with West controlling everything Kardashian does, and treating her like a trophy wife.
If their relationship wasn’t already nauseating, they decided to start a family. Kardashian gave birth to North “Nori” West on June 15, 2013. They soon after became engaged in October, and publicly displayed their affection toward each other in West’s music video for his song “Bound2” of his album “Yeezus.”
By “publicly displayed their affection,” I mean they basically simulated sex on a motorcycle with West yelling in the background about girls who “rock Forever 21 but just turned thirty.”
“I love to hate Kimye! They’re hilarious and I can’t believe they named their baby North West,” said junior Michelle Barclay.
3. His crazy outspoken rants.
-Who can forget West’s infamous interruption during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards while Taylor Swift was receiving an award for “Best Female Video”?
“Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time,” the rapper blurted out to the boo-ing crowd.
-While filming a live TV fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina, West criticized the media and added, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
-West has had endless blog and Twitter rants. An example of one of these outbursts was after an Entertainment Weekly critic gave his “Glow in the Dark” tour a B+ rating.
“What’s a B+ mean? I’m an extremist, its either pass or fail! A+ or F-! You know what, f___ you and the whole f___ing staff,” West wrote.
