For the first time in six years, singer/actor Justin Timberlake released a new single at midnight on January 14.
Timberlake’s new single is titled “Suit and Tie” and is already outselling “Sexy Back,” his previous hit single.
“Suit and Tie” is similiar to the 31-year-old’s old music, yet different at the same time. The single uses many 70’s sounds, such as the harp and horn. It is a futuristic, up-beat hit that can be described as a “best-man’s wedding toast.”
Timberlake announced via Twitter that he would be coming out with a new song only three days before its release. This gave his fans little time to process Timberlake’s comback.
One aspect of the song that makes it so successful is that it features infamous rap star Jay-Z. It is safe to say that this song is different from anything out right now.
Experts predicted that the song would not be successful in its first week. It was predicted that “Suit and Tie” would not be anywhere near as successful as “Sexy Back,” which sold 250,000 copies in the first week.
However, within the first hour of its debut, the single was number one on iTunes. The week is not over and the song has already beat “Sexy Back” in the number of first-week sales.
Although “Suit and Tie” was successful, its success did not even come close to surpassing Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber’s records. Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” sold 623,000 copies in the first week, and Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” sold 521,000 copies.
“I think Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift’s music sell more because they are very popular main stream artists that both little kids and young adults listen to. Justin Timberalake is a little more unique and interests a more sophisticated, mature audience,” says sophomore Brina Haugland.
Timberlake’s audience may be a bit more mature considering the seven-year gap between his music. No matter what age, his fans of all ages are showing him love with the release of his new music.
