On Monday, October 23rd, barriers were smashed when the girls soccer team won their first Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) title in school history! The team has had an amazing year, going undefeated for the entirety of the season.

In the game against East Brunswick, the scoreboard remained tied at zero for the first two halves. Shortly into overtime, however, Jennifer Ward (senior) scored a game winning goal with an assist from Misan Uduaghan (sophomore).

When asked about her immediate thoughts after scoring the goal, Ward stated, “I felt like I was on top of the world. I had worked so hard for that moment all year so for it to finally happen felt so surreal.” The team displayed athletic dominance this entire season and Jennifer Ward is one of the top players to keep an eye on as she plans on joining the women’s soccer team at TCNJ (in the Fall of 2024).

Another team member, Ava Cavotta, reflected on her thoughts about their prior games against East Brunswick and some extraordinary accomplishments they obtained within the division.

“Besides our first season game against East Brunswick, resulting in a tie, we went undefeated for the rest of the season, making us red division champs.” She went on to detail her thoughts about the unprecedented GMC win. “Honestly, it feels so surreal making history. We worked so hard starting from losing GMCs last year to the finals. We put so much work in and went in feeling confident, not cocky. Everyone on the team played an important role in making history. This is something you dream of as a freshman and to be champions our senior year is insane.”

As this year's seniors go on to complete what is left of their final season of soccer at MTHS, they can be proud of their historic GMC championship win! Both the boys and girls teams worked incredibly hard for their dominance throughout the 2023 regular and championship season games. The Monroe community should be incredibly proud of our soccer athletes for their commitment towards achieving excellence!
