Who cares about Mayweather vs Pacquiao when you can watch the fight between Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik on Twitter?
On May 6 ,2015, people all over the world stopped what they were doing to watch the Twitter fight between the past BFF’s Malik and Tomlinson.
Tomlinson and Malik have been best friends for five years since the start of the band in 2010. The two have been inseparable, and have managed to get in and out of trouble while sharing laughs (and blunts).
The two met in July 2010 on X-Factor when they were put into a group along with future band mates Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan.
Throughout the last few years (four years, eight months and two days, to be exact) as a band, the boys experienced many milestones together from dining with royalty to winning 19 teen choice awards out of 19 nominations.
During this time, they seemed to have kept the same excitement and passion for making music, and had developed brother-like relationships with everyone in the band.
On March 25, 2015 when Malik left the band to go join music producer Naughty Boy, fans assumed the boys would have parted on good terms.
A month and a half later on May 6, our assumptions were deemed incorrect when a Twitter war broke out.
It all started when bandmate Liam Payne posted an Instagram video joking about a new fifth member who would play harmonica.
In response to this, Naughty Boy posted on twitter saying, “replace this” with a picture of him and Malik with an apple filter.
Aggravated, Tomlinson responded through an indirect tweet, causing a small fight to break out between him and Naughty Boy (see below).

This wasn’t the first time Tomlinson and the producer had publicly shared their dislike for one another, but it was the first time Malik chose a side. For months, fans had awaited the moment when Malik would show his loyalty, and they were shocked at who he chose.
“@Louis_Tomlinson remember when you had a life and stopped making b****y comments about mine?” Malik tweeted at 12:18 pm on May 6. This was also the time when you could hear a faint cry erupt from every fan’s mouth.
Malik chose Naughty Boy.
When I came home crying and told my whole family about this disaster, I was met with the same question multiple times: “Who is Naughty Boy?”
This got me thinking – why did Malik leave playing in stadiums with millions of screaming girls for a sound cloud producer? There had to be a catch.
Naughty boy is a 30-year-old man who produced most of his songs in 2013 for his only album “Hotel Cabana”.
Malik and Naughty Boy do have one thing in common that could cause them to merge together: record labels.
Syco Management is 50 percent owned by Simon Cowell and 50 percent by Sony. Malik was signed as a solo artist to Syco within days after he left One Direction.
Likewise, Naughty Boy is currently still signed to Virgin EMI records, which was sold to Sony.
Furthermore, Naughty Boy’s supposed label “Naughty Boy Records” does not have a wikipedia page or website. When Googled, there are only references to it and no direct site listed.
So in the end, Malik left for a sketchy producer and the same record label.
This is quite far from his original statement saying he wanted to be a normal 22-year-old.
You could obviously see why Tomnlinson and the other boys would feel lied to or betrayed.
Fans feel the same way: “I feel confused, lied to, and betrayed [by Zayn]” says freshman Julianna Palmer.
Malik left his best friends for years for this guy nobody had really heard of, and he left them in the dust.
“I don’t like Zayn anymore because he betrayed his friend of five years for his friend of five months,” says freshman Alexandra Beagan.
We expected them to at least be cordial to each other in public or social media. I mean, the first Jonas Brothers Thanksgiving after the breakup must have been awkward, but they’re still brothers.
Malik, however, had to stick his nose into the fight between Naughty Boy and Tomlinson. He picked a side, and the world immediately split in half. You were either team Louis or team Zayn.
The once strong One Direction was torn apart for what feels like the millionth time in 2015. Friendships were ending, people were screaming, and the world was turned upside down.
In the beginning, most fans were planning on staying loyal to Malik. After all, we all know the tolls stress can take on the body.
Later on, when he was seen recording with Naughty Boy, some respect was lost, but we still believed in him as a person and in his relationship with the boys.
After the fight and when he sat by and watched his best friend and would-be best man be humiliated and ridiculed and joined in, that was when the world truly split in half.
Since the fight, Malik has lost 17,000 followers and counting, me being one of them.
He also has lost the respect of millions. He was sitting there, next to Naughty Boy, watching him type rude things to Tomlinson about his insecurities. No matter what happened in the past, friends should not do that.
Whether Zayn leaving is a publicity stunt, a life crisis, or just too much stress, everything has taken an ugly turn.
I hope they can find a way to mend their relationship and remember the best of the last five years.
